If a fly flies, flies fly

Language. It’s a great conversation-starter.

“A fly flies, but flies fly”.

“Still moving”.

“Glue sticks”.

Really makes you think, doesn’t it? Not really. Nonetheless and moreover.

How about you? Got some?

  1. “ The peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. Discuss. ”

    — Mike Myers as Linda Richman in a Coffee Talk sketch in his Saturday Night Live years.

That’s the one that stuck to my mind but there’s quite a few interesting ones listed on Wikipedia :

“Palmolive – it’s neither Palm, nor Olive. Discuss.”
“Grape Nuts – it contains neither grapes, nor nuts. Discuss.”
“The Civil War was neither civil nor a war. Discuss”
“The radical reconstruction of the South after the Civil War was neither radical nor a reconstruction. Discuss.”
“The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy nor Roman nor an empire. Discuss.” (This quote is based on a famous comment by Voltaire.)

“Ralph Fiennes is spelled neither rafe nor fines. Discuss.”
“Duran Duran is neither a Duran nor a Duran. Discuss.”
“Rhode Island is neither a road nor is it an island. Discuss.”
“The Thighmaster is neither a thigh nor a master. Discuss.”

    1. Bonjour Stéphane,

Examinons point par point cette liste:

Palmolive – it’s neither Palm, nor Olive.”: It is in fact both palm and olive oils, since they are the main ingredients in this soap.
Grape Nuts – it contains neither grapes, nor nuts..”: Nor is the pineapple the fruit of the pine. Or Lucky Charms magically delicious. They are delicious, but it is through no magical process whatsoever.
The Civil War was neither civil nor a war. ”: The American Civil War is a prolonged armed conflict that took place within the boundaries established by a nation or former nation and carried out by its inhabitants. It is then a civil war.
“The Radical Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War was neither radical nor a reconstruction. ”: Reconstruction refers to the process of overhauling, and radical, to the Radical republicans who overhauled the political and social system of the US. It is the Radical Republican Reconstruction.
The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy nor Roman nor an empire. (This quote is based on a famous comment by Voltaire.)” The term Holy is used to describe the statute of the emperor; Empire is associated with the powers bestowed on the ruler, who calls himself “emperor”. Roman is first used by Otto II (also known as the palendrome King) to dissociate his realm from the other Christian Empire, ruled from Constantinople.
The peanut is neither a pea nor a nut.” Indeed, it as a legume. It is called “peanuts” in America because of Charles Schultz’ fondness for them.
Ralph Fiennes is spelled neither rafe nor fines.” Yeah. What’s up with that? And Dvorak is pronounced “vordjak” not “Duh-vor-ak”.
Duran Duran is neither a Duran nor a Duran.” Nor is Duran Duran Duran.
Rhode Island is neither a road nor is it an island“. Rhode Island is in fact an island, and is used to refer to the US State whose official name is “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.”
The Thighmaster is neither a thigh nor a master.” No, but it shall rule your thighs with a will (and springs) of steel.
The Progressive Era was neither progressive nor an era.” Calling an “era” only serves to give it more weight than “period” which is usually used for artistic movements and the sorts. Progressive refers to the “progressive-thinking” people who were tremendously active during these 30 years or so.
Did Truman drop the bomb on the Japanese to end the war or to scare the hell out of the Russians? ” For the real scoop, see Dr. Strangelove or The Fog Of War.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is neither Mormon nor a tabernacle nor a choir.” Well, in fact, it is a choir, and it is composed of Mormons, and it got its name from the Mormon Tabernacle—a tabernacle is a polysemic word (having many meanings) that can refer to a place of worship.
The New Deal was neither new nor was it a deal.” Well, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was echoing is inauguration speech as president.
The Romanesque Church design was based on the Roman Basilica.LMGTFY
The chickpea is neither a chick nor a pea.” Nor is Chick Corea a bird or Korean.
Transitional Romanesque architecture was neither transitional nor Romanesque.” See 2 up.
The internal combustion engine was neither internal nor combustion.” It is in fact combustion inside the combustion chamber that makes this clunky, messy and noisy contraption work, or so to speak.
The Jelly bean is neither made of jelly nor is it a bean.” The jelly bean is a peanut that has been jellified by ways of cryogenic dehydration and whose molecules turn into jelly, much like my brain right now.

      Thank you for your time.
